HealthAmerica began in 1975 with its first office in the West Penn Hospital of Pittsburgh, PA and then opened a second office soon after in the nearby town of Monroeville. In 1981 the company merged with Healthplans Corporation of Nashville, TN and earned the status of the biggest independent investor-owned and operated HMO’s nationwide. New offices opened throughout the 1980’s and in 1988 the company was purchased by The Coventry Corporation of Texas which provided the financial stability its previous owners could not. In the 1990’s HealthAmerica rolled out a number of new products including PPO’s, Medicare HMO’s and had expanded its coverage to 545,000 members. More plans followed in the early 2000’s and have brought them to the size and success the company enjoys today.
