Health Insurance FAQ: Self-employed : What are the options?
If you are 'Self-employed', living in South Carolina, you have the same health insurance options as any other individual in the market for health insurance. Of course, there are health insurance companies that market their products strictly to the self-employed population but even if you are not self-employed, you still have access to these plans. Why do the self-employed entrepreneurs get discriminated against in terms of health insurance products they can purchase?
These individuals are not necessarily discriminated against, they just generally do not have the resources to purchase small group health insurance so they are thrown into the individual health insurance market. South Carolina offers an open-enrollment period for self-employed individuals to obtain small group health insurance plans ensuring guaranteed coverage with no pre-existing condition clauses.
* Health Insurance Help: SCHIP & SAM: What are these all about?
The South Carolina Health Insurance Pool (SCHIP) was created in order to make health insurance coverage available to residents of South Carolina who are either unable to obtain health insurance because of a medical condition or whose premium for health coverage exceeds 150% of the Pool rate. We can help you with SCHIP insurance.
South Carolina chose to enhance the SCHIP so that it meets the requirements of an acceptable alternative mechanism. This is known as the State Alternative Mechanism (SAM). The SCHIP coverage is not an insurance policy nor is it a Blue Cross Blue Shield of South Carolina policy. The SCHIP coverage is administered by Blue Cross Blue Shield of South Carolina.
