"The Office of the Health Insurance Commissioner (OHIC) was established by the Rhode Island state legislature in 2004 to broaden the accountability of health insurers operating in the state of Rhode Island. Under this legislation, the Office is dedicated to:

The MIB is the Medical Information Bureau, the most common tool used in underwriting health insurance applications. The MIB is a storage vault that holds a collection of every claim made to any and all health insurance companies. In other words, when a claim is made by a patient for a provider’s services, that claim gets processed by the patient’s insurance company and then gets sent to the MIB for permanent record.
What does this mean for a health insurance applicant? If the applicant has had and used health insurance in the past, the health insurance company they are currently applying for will obtain a history of all of the past claims from the MIB that particular applicant has made in the past to determine eligibility for health insurance with their company.
When completing a health insurance application, it is important to release all information regarding your health history. If you do not reveal certain information, by choice or by accident, the health insurance company will eventually find out.
