In Puerto Rico, SCHIP was approved by CMS as a Medicaid expansion program for children age 18 and under whose family income is less than 200 percent of the Commonwealth’s poverty level. The Puerto Rico Health Department (Health Department) administers SCHIP by contracting with health insurance organizations to provide services to qualified beneficiaries at negotiated capitation rates (premiums). We also have information about Puerto Rico Health Reform - (Reforma de Salud de Puerto Rico in Spanish). This Health reform is, locally referred to as the Reform (la Reforma in Spanish). This program is 'government-run' and provides medical and healthcare services to indigent and impoverished citizens of Puerto Rico. They do this by contracting private health insurance companies, as opposed to the traditional system of government-owned hospitals and emergency centers.
