Health insurance plans are offered to anyone between the ages of 0 and 64. At age 65, most people will automatically be eligible for Medicare, the government sponsored health insurance program for all eligible people 65 and older.
Health Insurance companies have been known to put restrictions on insuring newborn babies. While most health insurance companies will accept a newborn baby, some will make the parents wait until their newborn is 4, 6, or even 8 weeks old. In addition, there are also some health insurance companies that will not accept a baby under the age of one unless they are insured with one of their parents on the policy.
The 64 year old age range can also be tricky in terms of eligibility. Some health insurance carriers will not take any 64 year olds, while others will accept applications for people up to 64 and a half. The reasoning would be based on the higher risk of this age group in addition to the fact that they are soon eligible for Medicare.
Medicare often begins 3 months before individuals 65th birthday which is where the insurance companies get the 64 and a half cut off.
