The New Mexico Medical Insurance Pool (NMMIP) was established by the 1987 New Mexico State Legislature. The Pool was created to provide access to health insurance coverage to residents of New Mexico who are denied health insurance and considered uninsurable. NMMIP also provides health benefit portability coverage to New Mexicans who have exhausted COBRA benefits and have no other portability options available to them. We can help you with the policies. Just give us a call (800) 554-9142

Health Insurance FAQ: Are bills from providers negotiable?
Would it be surprising to know that the leading cause of bankruptcy in the United States is unpaid medical bills? Probably not. Would it then be safe to assume that providers are getting stiffed because of unpaid medical bills every day? Probably so. With this knowledge, is it safe to assume that most providers are willing to negotiate on their charges?
More often than not, a medical provider or facility will negotiate bills with their patients. Even patients whom have health insurance can sometimes weasel a deal with their provider. Next time you receive a bill from your doctor, hospital or medical provider, don’t be scared to give them a call and ask them, “If I pay my bill today will you grant me 25% off your total as I just don’t have the money to pay the entire bill.”
Health insurance policyholders can even call the provider and ask for a discount, some cases even after the amount of the bill has been applied to their deductible. In this situation, you would simply say, “I understand this entire amount on my bill was applied to my deductible but I just simply cannot come up with this kind of money.”
It may be surprising that providers are so willing to negotiate but why wouldn’t they if the flipside of negotiating with you would be not getting paid at all. With health insurance and providers, knowing how to work the system, legally, is always a plus.
