Tips for dealing with HMOs
Out of Network:: HMOs normally contract with a specific network of doctors and hospitals, which offer a set price for everything – ranging from a doctor visit or to hospital stay. If you end up using out of network doctors or hospitals you will end up paying 3 to 5 times more. So if you sign up of with HMO, then use only the in network medical facilities of HMO, unless it is a medical emergency. This way you will be able to control your medical insurance costs.
Waiting Period::If have taken a health insurance cover with an HMO, then you might want to ask when the coverage actually begins and when does the waiting period end. You need undergo a medical procedure or need a doctor visit during the waiting period, the expenses will have to be borne by you.
Family deductible:: You might want to think carefully about adding your spouse or any other family member to your health insurance cover. This is because the deductible does not increase proportionately. For e.g.: if you have $1000 deductible on your health insurance policy, if you add your spouse to your health cover, then the deductible may be $2500 instead of $2000.
