Deductible : This would be the amount that the insured must pay out of their pocket until their health plan starts paying. A good example of this would be that your health insurance program has an annual deductible of $1,000. You get admitted to the hospital and your accrued medical bills equal $30,000. You would owe $1,000 out of your pocket. The health insurance company would pay $29,000 of your medical bills.

Premium : This is the dollar amount the policy owner pays monthly, bi-monthly, quarterly, semi-annually or annually for their health insurance policy.

Coinsurance : This is the amount or percentage that the health insurance or the policy owner pays after the deductible. Coinsurance of a health plan can be set with great variation. Options might be 100%, 80%, 70%, or even 50%.

Copayment : This would be the amount a policy holder must pay out of their pocket for a specified service on their health insurance policy. For example, a policy owner might have a $50 copayment on their plan for specialist Dr. Visits. When they arrive for their service the copayment is paid to the provider. In most instances the insurance company pays the rest of the visit. See your health plan for specific details.
